Conversation with Nicodemus

1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. ² This man came to him at night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you have come from God as a teacher, for no one is able to perform these signs that you perform unless God is with him.” ³ Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly I say to you, unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” ⁴ Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter into the womb of his mother for the second time and be born, can he?”

A Physical and Natural Illustration

⁵ Jesus answered, “Truly, truly I say to you, unless someone is born from water and spirit, he is not able to enter into the kingdom of God. ⁶ The one having been born from the flesh is flesh, and the one having been born from the spirit is spirit. ⁷ Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘It is necessary for you to be born again.’ ⁸ The wind blows wherever it wants, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone having been born from the spirit.”

The Humbling of Nicodemus

⁹ Nicodemus answered and said to him, “How can these things be?” ¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you do not understand these things? ¹¹ Truly, truly I say to you, we speak what we know, and we bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony! ¹² If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe; how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? ¹³ And no one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of man. ¹⁴ And just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of man must be lifted up, ¹⁵ so that everyone believing in him will have eternal life.”

Summary of Salvation and Judgment

¹⁶ For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, in order that whoever believes in him will not be destroyed but have eternal life. ¹⁷ For God did not send his Son into the world in order that he should judge the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. ¹⁸ The one who believes in him is not judged, but the one who does not believe has already been judged, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. ¹⁹ And this is the judgment: that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light, because their works were wicked. ²⁰ For the one who practices wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, so that his works may not be exposed. ²¹ But the one who practices the truth comes to the light, in order that his works may be revealed that they are accomplished in God.

Miracle at Cana

1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; ² and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. ³ When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus *said to Him, “They have no wine.” ⁴ And Jesus *said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.” ⁵ His mother *said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” ⁶ Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each. ⁷ Jesus *said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim. ⁸ And He *said to them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it to him. ⁹ When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter *called the bridegroom, ¹⁰ and *said to him, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.” ¹¹ This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

¹² After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there a few days.
